The 2024 Paris Paralympics, scheduled to begin on August 28, 2024, will highlight the dedication and hard work of Indonesian Paralympians. As part of the preparations, the design of the costumes for the Indonesian contingent is currently being finalized. Didiet Maulana, through his brand IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana, has taken on the responsibility of designing the costumes this time. The costumes are inspired by the concept of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity), which is a fundamental value in Indonesian society.
Collaborating with Mills, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), and the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPC), Didiet Maulana has created a collection that includes jackets, jerseys, and track pants. The design not only focuses on aesthetics but also aims to embody the values of unity and diversity that are integral to the Indonesian nation.
The “Sandya Niskala” design series incorporates elements of traditional ikat weaving, symbolizing the diverse culture of Indonesia. The design also features geometric patterns inspired by ocean waves, reflecting Indonesia’s identity as an archipelagic nation. Motifs inspired by the Garuda Pancasila, the national emblem of Indonesia, are also incorporated into the design to symbolize strength, unity, and solidarity.
The colors chosen for the costumes – red for courage, white for purity, gold for grandeur and glory, and gray for responsibility – have been selected to convey specific meanings. Didiet hopes that the vibrant colors will bring energy, renewal, and positive vibes to the Indonesian athletes competing in the Paralympics.
To celebrate the launch of the collection, Didiet Maulana organized a photo session with Indonesian Paralympians participating in the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The session aimed to highlight the spirit and dedication of the athletes representing Indonesia on the global stage. The collection, themed “Embrace and Celebrating Our Athlete,” is expected to inspire and empower the athletes as they compete, promoting unity and sportsmanship.
The costumes designed by Didiet Hediprasetyo for the 2024 Paris Olympics also drew inspiration from Indonesian national symbols and values. Both Didiet Maulana and Didit Hediprasetyo have made significant contributions to designing costumes that not only serve a practical purpose but also carry messages of pride and unity for Indonesia in international sporting events.
